On 11 June 1954, a Helicopter Rescue Section was formed as part of the commitment of the Philippine government to the International Standards and Recommended Practices of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

On 12 December 1956, the Helicopter Rescue Section was reorganized into 505TH Air Rescue Squadron.

On 15 February 1996, the 505TH Air Rescue Squadron was upgraded into 505TH Search and Rescue Group… as a response of the Department of National Defense on the increasing incidents of strong typhoons, volcanic eruptions, rampaging lahar or mudflows, and maritime and aerial disasters.

Now, the 505TH Search and Rescue Group is not only the foremost Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response Unit of the Philippine Air Force, but also of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
